well i suggest that you to start with sit down and decide what your computer is going to do
is it for gaming? video editing? and so on

will you need lots of storeage or a high performance or more durable hard drive? it may be a good idea to buy two drives and have a smaller size high performance one as the boot drive that houses your os and installed progs and a seperate one for large files like video, disk images, and downloads

how meny usb ports are you going to need?
what os do you plan to use?

knowing what your computers purpose will be is the only real place to start
from purpose you can figure out how much processor power, ram, graphics card and storeage you need

the more extras you plan to run on it the better power supply you will want (example usb devices that are powered via the usb ports or extra hard drives)

do you have plans to overclock? you will need a more efficent cooling system

would having a quiet machine be important? think about this when picking the hard drive, cooling fans and power pack

what display devices you plan to use? you will need a graphics card that has the right connectors

does your mainboard and/or processor come with thermal paste?

does the onboard sound card have the specs you need or will u need to buy one? (meny shops do not stock sound cards and have to order them from their suppliers)

what mouse and keyboard you plan to use will u have egnoth usb ports or the correct connectors

what about your network connections do you plan to use ethernet or go wireless?

will you want firewire or whatever they are called now?

what about future expansion?
how likey is it your will want to improve on processor(s),Ram (having free slots is better than having to replace your sticks) ,graphics (meny people cant afford to have the best grahpics system from the get go so having two or three grapihcs card slots that support SLI could be a good future plan for double or tripleing the graphics performance), storeage (can the power pack handle extra harddrives to be added later or will you need more usb/firewire ports when using a external solution)
will there be egnoth slots to add new and cool things like extra graphics cards pci usb cards)

be patent as well!
make sure all the stuff you are shoping for are compatable!!!
you dont want to buy tons of parts to find some will not fit in the mainboad!
double and triple check!!!
References :
http://compreviews.about.com/od/general/a/DesktopPCParts.htm

you could also google or yahoo computer building checklist

You may also want to add some RAM. It can be useful.

And remember that if you're going over 3-4 gigs of RAM (depending on the video card and other components the number varies from 2.5-3.5gigs) you should run a 64-bit OS if you'd like to actually be able to address it all
